Fermented foods and drinks are a big trend.

Popular for their medicinal, gut-soothing properties and unique flavors, fermented favorites like kombucha and kimchi are omnipresent at major chain supermarkets and are catching on at Lehigh Valley restaurants.

But the process of fermentation isn’t new, by any means. The first fermentation of food dates back to 600 BC.

What is new in the world of fermentation is an event hosted by the Easton Farmers Market. Funky Ferments Fest will run 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 3 during the regular market, held at Scott Park.

The fest celebrates all the funky foods and drinks we love — from kombucha and stinky cheese to craft beer and sauerkraut.

Here’s the schedule of events:

You can also enter the Kombucha Homebrew Contest. From 11 a.m. to noon (on the Dell in front of Stage), you can showcase your artisanal fermenting skills. You can enter up to three flavors at $5 per entry. Rules: You must bring a gallon of each entry with the only labeling being the ingredients and flavor.

A panel of local kombucha experts will award $100 to the winner; the people’s choice winner will receive EFM market tokens and swag. Register to enter at eastonfarmersmarket.com/event/funkyferments/

And while you’re at the fest, pick up a limited edition SCOBY shirts in honor of the commonly used acronym for “symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast.”
